One of the most well known career ministries in the country is Roswell United Methodist Church Job Networking in suburban Atlanta.
Last month, ABC-TV World News featured them in a story called “A Hope, A Prayer, A Job.” It started me thinking about the connection between prayer and job search.
Is it OK to pray for a job?
My first thought is YES, of course. But then I remember times when I prayed for a job, and I didn’t get it. What happened? Maybe God didn’t hear me, He’s busy or doesn’t care. That can’t be it.
- Perhaps I didn’t pray right. Something I did wrong. That’s possible.
- Possibly, it’s God’s way of redirecting or protecting me.
- Maybe I didn’t pray enough or believe enough.
- Could it be prayer doesn’t work?
- What do you think?
Thoughts About Praying for a Job
The best strategy to find jobs, careers, calling combines three efforts:
Imagine you’re dialing 1-800-Dear-God … calling by prayer the one Person who knows everyone, everywhere, all the time. Ask Him every day before every meeting, phone call and email.
He knows the plans He has for you. He knows where all the job openings are. He knows everyone who’s hiring. Consider this amazing thought in Matthew 7:7 in the Bible.
“Ask, and it shall be given to you;
seek, and you shall find; knock it shall be opened to you.”
As you’re searching for jobs, be prayerful, intentional and alert. Make at least 1 new contact every day – even better make 10 new contacts a day. No matter the outcome of the contacts, remember to:
“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances,
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Pray for Jobs for Others
May I suggest that praying is not all about you or me, but also about God Himself, and other people?
While you’re praying for you and your job search, also pray for others who are searching and praying for jobs. Ask others to pray for you. You can start now by coming to our Prayer Wall online so that you can:
Even better is to pray with others in person. Our career groups and member churches not only offer job search help and fellowship, but offer prayer times, places and people.
Not Sure How to Pray for a Job?
Here are three suggestions about praying for jobs or anything else:
- Try Pocket Prayers from The Christian’s Career Journey written by our career ministry partner, Susan Whitcomb.
- Pray The Prayer of Jabez for 30 days as found on Wikipedia.
- Take a deeper dive into The Lord’s Prayer from the book “Living the Lord’s Prayer.”
Or you can just get in a quiet place and take your hopes and dreams, worries and wonderings, privately to God. He is always available, never to busy and happy to hear from you.
So Tell Me What You Think.
Is the ABC-TV headline – “A Hope, A Prayer, A Job” right or not?
Is prayer the connecting point between hope and a job? If yes, then how does that work? It’s a big question, and there are lots of answers.
I would love to hear yours. All of us are smarter than any one of us. We are better together in Him!
