Honor Veterans Today

Veterans Day 2011

The grandkids are coming over today because they are out of school for Veterans Day.

Veterans Day?  I am not usually thinking about war, soldiers and Veterans Day, so I thought I would see what it is about…

“On Veterans Day, we come together to pay tribute to the men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. Americans across this land commemorate the patriots who have risked their lives to preserve the liberty of our Nation, the families who support them and the heroes no longer with us … As we honor our veterans with ceremonies on this day, let our actions strengthen the bond between a Nation and her warriors.” President Barack Obama 2010

I started in the Army National Guard as a clerk typist in the 60s, later transferred to the Army Reserve 81st ARCOM Public Information Detachment, serving a total of six years. Never went to war even in the midst of Vietnam conflict. Some of my buddies did. Fraternity brother Ted died in the Tet Offensive. One of our ministry leaders was there too, caught in an all-night fire-fight.  When dawn broke, most of his men were killed. He counts every day since then as a gift.

Careers in the military are serious business. When you are “called up,” it becomes more than just a job or career. Depending on your assignment, your service may require your life.  That kind of service, and possible sacrifice, begs us to honor all men and women in our military – past, present and future.

May I suggest we each take a few minutes today to honor veterans? Think about the people you know, and remember those who are or have been in military. Give them a call. Write them an email. Bless them for their service.

Let me also take a moment more to suggest, if you are in a crossroads in your career, consider careers and calling into the military. Millions of men and women have gotten great starts in their work life with the military – whether for 2 or 20 years. Lots of skills training, benefits, leadership and team development and service to country! Blessings to all who serve,
Brian
